THE NEW INSTITUTE FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT IS LAUNCHED!

This summer the Arizona Board of Regents conferred institute status on the Office of Government Programs! This had been a dream of ours for many years, and we marked the distinction with a celebratory bash October 10. Hosted by Joel Valdez, Senior Vice President for Business Affairs and former Tucson City Manager; Mark Zupan, Dean of the Eller College of Business and Public Administration; and Brint Milward, Associate Dean and Director of the School of Public Administration and Policy, about 80 elected and appointed local government officials, UA administrators and faculty, corporate sponsors, Southwest Leadership alumni, family and friends gathered in McClelland Hall for toasts and tributes. The Institute for Local Government has had a lot of help along the road to this achievement. The U of A's Office of Economic Development, former U of A Presidents Henry Koffler and Manuel Pacheco, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and many corporate sponsors (especially APS) have played significant roles in our evolution. More recently, U of A President Peter Likins Joel Valdez, Dean Zupan, and Associate Dean Milward have assured our future with permanent funding and a home in the Eller College of Business and Public Administration, where the Institute can flourish. A plaque was awarded to Professor Emeritus Don L. Bowen for his dedication to Arizona local government in the 1980s and his dream for such an institute.

As the Institute for Local Government, we have a new look. Our logo and title have replaced the AzCAP name and will accompany all publications and materials. The Southwest Leadership Program for Local and State Government will get more exposure as we join associations of local government institutes in other regions. Their leadership programs can benefit, as well, from our nine years of experience. The Institute for Local Government will also sponsor occasional forums around the state on various local government issues.
