SOUTHWEST LEADERSHIP ALUMNI PROGRAM

The third annual Southwest Leadership Alumni Program was held on January 5. An afternoon advanced workshop heralded a new approach to public leadership: using the principles of ancient wisdom to guide governance. "If Aristotle Were Major.." made its national debut with philosophers Ed Greneger from North Carolina and Jerry Walls from Kentucky. The workshop was adaped from philosopher tom Morris' celebrated book If Aristotle Ran General Motors: The New Soul of Business Fifty alumni from photo of folks at the program Arizona state agencies, counties, cities and towns as well as Georgia help inaugurate the workshop. Secretary of State Betsey Bayless then presented the Certificate in Public Policy and Management to the Class of 2000 in a special graduation reception and ceremony. The alumni program conclded with a banquet and keynote address by Jerry Walls on "Wisdom from the Hardwoond," inspired by the hard-earned wisdom of male and female professional basketball players and applied to governance. Arizona Public Service Company, represented by Evelyn Casuga and Charles Thompson, sponsored the alumni program for the third year in a row.

FOR ARIZONA'S NEW ECONOMY?

The Institute for Local Government is developing a one-day workshop on strategic planning for e-government in your jurisdiction. The workshop is designed for governing body members, county, city and town managers, state agency directors, and MIS department heads. The first will be held in Tucson this fall. An expert in e-government from the UA's nationally-renowned Management Information Systems department will conduct the workshop. SANTA CRUZ COUNTY FAREWELL

The Institute for Local Government has enjoyed a strong working relationship with Santa Cruz County for 13 years. Two of the country's most dedicated public officials retired after a lengthy tenure that ushered in significant accomplishments for the county. The Institute for Local Government honored Santa Cruz County Supervisor Ron Morriss and Manager Dennis Miller at their final board meeting last December in Nogales.

COMMUNITY IN
ARIZONA

A new book with fascinating case histories covering everything citizens would need to know about choices in local governance will be published this spring. It will provide comprehensive in-depth coverage of incorporation, annexation, disincorporation, beginning a new town, services, finances and special districts, among other topics. Nicole Fyffe, MPA graduate student and Institute intern is researching and writing the book.
