Michelle Tucker, in her own words:

Learning About the MPA

I was introduced to the MPA degree by my boyfriend long before I applied to Eller. As a nonprofit professional in Los Angeles, I immediately recognized the technical skills and broader knowledge the degree offered.

But, like many of my colleagues, the timing was never right to step away from my agency and return to academia. When the time was right, I set my sights on the School of Public Administration and Policy at Eller and the UA.

Strong Curriculum and Faculty

The curriculum offered a strong foundation of politics and policy. I was also pleased to see the large percentage of students with professional experience. Furthermore, moving to southern Arizona presented an opportunity to experience the public sector in an unfamiliar location. I believe it is important to understand how different communities respond to common challenges.

Like many public service professionals, I recognize issues in the public sector are interconnected. Dr. Jun Peng's course on Nonprofit and Local Government Finance, Dr. Pat Patton's course on Local Economic and Community Development, and Dr. Tannis Salant's course on Local Government have given me a more comprehensive picture of the world in which public service is provided. These courses have been invaluable to me in my current role as Economic Development Intern for the Town of Oro Valley.

Primary Academic Interest

My primary interest is in public/private partnerships; specifically the management of service implementation networks. This semester I am independently studying network management theory under the advisement of Dr. Craig Smith.

After Graduation

Upon graduating I will continue contributing to the effective management of networks. How does this happen? Many ways: providing direct service, leading a nonprofit, local government, academic research, program evaluation. The rigorous curriculum facilitated by the School of Public Administration and Policy has prepared me to serve in any capacity I choose.
